Government Center
With the improved connection to Interstate 691, the Government Center, with City Hall as its focal point will now become accessible to local and regional government interests.
Vehicular access is vital to the continuing viability of the Government Center, but local pedestrian traffic is also critical to its success. This Master Plan attempts to create a balance between the need for roadway access, and the desire to create a campus-like environment around City Hall and associated facilities.
The first step is to provide traffic calming devices at Liberty Street, which is the pedestrian link between City Hall, its primary parking, and the Meriden Library.
The second proposal is to eliminate Benjamin Street, creating a large block with parking at the center, and retail elements on the East Main Street and Pratt Street fronts. This will reduce traffic in the vicinity, provide more parking for the governmental facilities, and add some green space in front of the Library.
The long-term plan for this area is to develop Catlin Street, Twiss Street and Center Street as locations for government, business and light industrial facilities. The close proximity to Interstate 691 and other businesses makes this ideal for this type of development. It also encourages the interaction between government and business activities.
