Transportation

The existing transportation network in the City of Meriden is a mature one, providing a combination of expressway, local street, rail and public transit services. The most prominent transportation features are the controlled access highways, I-691, I-91 and Route 15; and the Amtrak rail line. These provide both barriers and opportunities.

The Master Plan includes improved access between the City Center and Interstate 691. This will be accomplished by developing a new boulevard connection between the end of Columbia Street and a realigned Camp Street.

The difficult traffic issues in the center, in and around the intersection of East and West Main streets, are a function of the combination of rail lines, one-way streets and the confluence of seven major roadways. The Master Plan resolves these issue by reducing the number of streets entering this area from seven to three and redesigning the traffic flow.

A new Transportation Center developed on the site of the Post Office will provide effective linkage between existing city bus routes and the rail line. This will provide outbound travelers ready access to the commuter rail service between New Haven and Springfield, MA that is under consideration and provide inbound travelers access to Meriden’s revitalized commercial districts.
