Streetscape Character

The streetscape is defined as the combination of all elements that occupy and define the public realm of a given street.  It includes the building facades, parked cars, awnings, canopies, signs, windows, doors, sidewalks, site furnishings, landscape, curbs, and the street itself.

Every component therefore has a role in creating and defining the streetscape.  Some buildings occupy important corner, intersection, or gateway locations and should use prominent design features such as towers, bays, or other vertical accentuations to reinforce the location.  Other buildings located away from these key locations simply serve to define the limits of the streetscape and reinforce its character.
